Fine show by Brenda’s ladies sparks super Springs success

A TEAM of eight members of Kilworth Springs GC women’s section won the Brampton Heath GC team trophy against four Northamptonshire clubs – Brampton Heath, Northampton, Overstone Park and Delapre, when the best three pairs from four counted towards the trophy.

Lorna Morris and Sarah Smith amassed a tally of 41 points to be the best pair and Lesley Barnett won the longest drive.

Captain Brenda Ashford said: “It was an excellent performance by all the ladies in this event.”

Kilworth Springs’ squad was: Brenda Ashford, Jean Evans, Sarah Smith, Lorna Morris, Deborah West, Nicola Perowne, Val Foster and Lesley Barnett.

MARKET Harborough finished 7-up on aggregate against Kirby Muxloe to go into the third round of the county women’s association’s inter-club foursomes championship, in which they were runners-up last season.

The team was Helen Perry, Suzanne Wright, Jane Burley and Wendy Williams. They play The Leicestershire in the next round.

Scraptoft were 8-up against Kilworth Springs, Ullesthorpe Court were 18-up against Charnwood Forest in other round 2-games.

Cosby are the reigning champions in this event.

NEIL Evans, who is now attached to Market Harborough GC, shot 3-under-par-67 to tie top in a PGA Midland pro/am tournament at Moor Hall GC. He shared first place with James Wright (Swindon).

Matthew Cort (Rothley Park) and Danny Taylor (Swingers GR) were on 2-under-68 for joint third.

Evans had four birdies on his card and dropped only one stroke.

In a similar regional PGA pro/am at Peterborough Milton, Evans, with level par 71, tied in seventh place.

COUNTY first team golfer Martin Anderson hit 3-under-par-68 to win the scratch award on John Moxon’s Vice-Captain’s Day at Kibworth GC.

This is his latest success in a fine run. He is now off +2 handicap.

Overall winner was Mark Henderson with his 78-11-67 return. There were also divisional awards.

Chris Palmer (74-6-68) led division one from James Yeomans (75-5-70), with Tom Duff (75-4-71) third. Tom Matthew (83-13-70) topped division two from Tim Formoy (88-16-72), with Melvyn Smith (90-16-74) third. Andrew McMurray was first in division three with his 95-24-71 card from two tied on 72 net, resolved on local rule. John Clampin (21) was second and Robin Hall (21) third.

Jamie Watson (80-10-70) was the junior prizewinner, with Peter Bolton and Jay Warren clinching the nearest the pin and longest drive awards respectively.

A two-division midweek Stableford has been played at Kibworth too. John Crisp (18) notched 37pts to head division one from Carl Luparia (15), 36, second on countback from Terry Roberts (11).

John Boyall (19), with 35pts, led division two from Phillip Morton (24), 33pts, with Alan Scarisbrick (23), on 31pts, third.

LEE Challinor has held his Professional’s Day Texas Scramble at Lutterworth GC.

Simon and Ben Lincoln, Phil Meakin and Andy Pope finished first with their 56.6 return. Neville Townsend, Jim Aspinwall and Peter Murray (58.2) were runners-up; Colin and Richard McKenzie, John Lester and Rob Wesson (58.7) were third.

The best mixed team comprised Liz Paris, Rita Ogden, Mick Shilcock and Alwyn Ogden with their 60 card, and the best women’s team, on 68.7, included Jane Lewis, Lesley Watson, Julie Barker and Chris Wilson.

Kevin Green won a prize as ‘best dressed’ and other awards went to: Jay Sheridan – nearest the pin on the 15th hole, Andrew Spencer – nearest the pin in 2 on the last, and Mark James, who hit the longest drive.
