THE Leicestershire county boys’ under-18 team made a successful defence of the three-cornered ‘BUT’ Trophy competition, which they won at Glen Gorse last season.

Their only previous success had also been at a local club, Lutterworth GC in 1998.

In this spring’s tournament, the county scored a total of 18 points to finish one ahead of hosts Bedfordshire at John O’Gaunt, 17pts, with Norfolk, on 10pts, third.

Leicestershire had trailed, tied with Norfolk on 3.5pts after the opening foursomes, headed at that stage by Bedfordshire with 8pts. But Leicestershire stormed back with a fine singles performance, with several of their players winning both their games in this second session.

Among them was Alastair Kinnaird, a Lutterworth College student and Huw Phillips, a Lutterworth GC member.

John Holland (Kibworth) is the county under-18 boys’ team manager.

HARRY Duval (Kibworth) won his singles match as a member of the county boys’ under-16/under-14 team which beat Northamptonshire 10-8 at Brampton Heath. He won by 4 and 3 against Alec Francis.

STEVE Bowyer (18) amassed 39ptsto win the Charles Phillips Trophy Stableford tournament at Kibworth GC. James Yeomans, round in 77, took the scratch award.

Kevin Jarman (10), with 37pts, led division one from Callum Jarman (5), 36pts, runner-up, with Scott Cassie, (10), 35pts, third.

Nick Potter (14), 35pts, topped division two from two tied on 34pts. Mike Holley (11) was second and Simon Ward (15) third. Andy Holyoak (19), 39pts, won division three from two on 35pts. Julian Kowalski (18) was second, Paul Coleman (15) third. John Bates (20), 39pts, was first in division four from Blair Grubb (21), 36pts, with Graham Tailby (26), 34, third.

Jamie Watson (10), with 32pts, was the junior winner.

KIBWORTH women’s representatives in the Mail on Sunday tournament are out after a dramatic sudden-death play-off away to Elton Furze GC. The game ended 2.5-2.5, forcing a play-off, which the hosts took to go through to the next round.

MARKET Harborough GC’s women’s Spring Rose Bowl saw four go through to the play-offs – Suzanne Wright (67 net) will play Gill Wooldridge (74 net); Jane Burley (69 net) meets Shirley Percival (76 net).

Suzanne Wright headed the silver division; Sylvia Price (76 net) won bronze A division and Anne French (78 net) bronze B in the medal competition.

The annual Iron Lady event could not be played because the course was closed due to the wet weather.

LUTTERWORTH GC’s medal competition saw Steve Davenport overall winner with his 90-25-65 card, one in front of runner-up Philip McGuinness.

Division one winner was Peter Carroll (12), also with 66 net, and Kevin Courtney (80-12-68) was second, and in division two Michael O’Flynn (87-20-67) was first from William Cossar (89-20-69).

Sam Skerratt was round in 71 to win the scratch prize and top junior was Jamie Bubb with his 71-6-65 card.

ANDREW Aveyard (4) notched 36pts to win a Stableford at Cold Ashby GC when there was a three-way tie on 35pts between Ashley Lloyd (20), Bradley Green (2) and Haydn Williams (26) second, third and fourth respectively on local rule.
