A foursome to be reckoned with as Lutterworth land county title

LUTTERWORTH beat Birstall 12-up on aggregate at Park Hill GC to become the Leicestershire county golf union 2011 inter-club mixed foursomes champions, They were 6-up in each of the two games in the final.

Sam Mayfield and Mary Hawkes beat Birstall’s Paul Frith and Clare Bailey. They were 3-up after the opening round and increased their advantage in round two, while clubmates Sam Skerratt and Kate Frankham were 2-up against Adam Dalby and Sue Bailey after 18 holes. When both Lutterworth pairs were 6-up, Birstall conceded after 14 holes of the second session.

Lutterworth were last county mixed foursomes champions in 1984.

Tony Harper, the immediate past county golf union president, presented his home club team with the trophy at Park Hill.

MARKET Harborough GC seniors’ section men have competed in a new event – a ‘Man of Steel’ Stableford. It was won by David Smith, the section’s vice-captain, with his total of 42 points.

Malcolm Tomlinson, on 39, was runner-up with Chris Price (38) third on countback from Robin Timms and Eric Wood.

Sixteen seniors joined up with eight juniors to form eight teams of two seniors and a junior, who played a full Stableford with the best two scores counting on each hole. Vince Ward, Dave Wilesmith and Ollie Povoas were first with 90pts, from Mike Wood, Francis Wilson and Jon Mundy.

JOHN Poole won the five-day members Bill Chisholm Trophy at Kibworth GC, awarded at a midweek Stableford competition. Poole, who has a 16 handicap, amassed 40pts.

Dave Scranage (18), with 45pts, topped division one from Geoff Brown (16), 42pts, with Martin Austick (15), 41pts, third. Peter Steele (26) scored 36pts to top division two from Tony Wicks (20), 35pts, and Jakub Radny (20), 33pts.

Suzy Clampin carded 87-14-73 to win the silver division of an EWGA medal, and Ella Corbett (104-32-72) topped bronze A section and Ann Hecks (96-26-70) bronze B.

In a similar medal, silver division winner was Brenda Andrews (19), 75 net, Alison Picken (102-27-75) led bronze A and Wendy Blount (107-34-73) headed bronze B.

Barbara King (27) beat Chris Mitchell (22) by 4 and 3 in the final of the Vets Salver.

Julie Simpson won the women’s Scratch Match-Play title against Emily Blount. Joyce Hall (22) beat Julia Dunkley (23) in the Bronze championship climax.

GLEN Gorse GC members have played in the seniors club championships for the Reg and Nancy Kempster Cups.

Alan James notched 42pts to win the men’s from Mick Hughes on 41. Antonio Mendes won the 60-69 years award with 40pts and Brian Fagin, with 36, was the 70 years-plus winner.

Jane Linsley (38pts) was the women’s winner from Elizabeth Cox (37). Brenda Hopewell, with 37, led the 60-69 years members and Joan Pearson (33pts) the 70 years and over.

Caroline Saunderson (35), with 64 net, won the women’s Cancer Relief medal from Magda Sargeant (25), 70 net, second, from two tied on 72 net – Sue Morris (18) was third on countback from Joyce Broughton (21). Brenda Hopewell (17) and Harriet Hewitt (8) both had 76 net.

Brenda Hopewell won the Scratch Cup with her 88-93-181 total from Joan Pearson (92-96-188). Members’ best aggregate from two of three stroke-play competitions counted.

COLD Ashby GC hosted the 2011 Midland Junior Champion of Champions tournament with boys and girls from across the region.

Henry James (of Kidderminster) carded 70-68-138 to win the boys’ under-18s section, with Jordan Wrisdale (Boston), after 75-69-144, top in the under-16s, and Harry Burt (Wrekin), with 74-71-145, the under-14s winner. Hannah Edmunds (Woodhall Spa), on 72-73-145, was the under-18 girls champion and Samantha Meese (Enville), after 71-72-143, took the under-16s title.
