FA Cup glory for Athletic’s women

LUTTERWORTH Athletic Ladies upset the form book as they progressed in the FA Cup – by inflicting league club Mansfield Town’s heaviest defeat of the season.

Mansfield, who are currently top of their league’s premier division, looked well-prepared and dominated the first 25 minutes but failed to make their possession pay.

Then on 30 minutes and against the run of play, Athletic’s infectious Helen Busby burst through, only to be brought down by the Mansfield keeper. After what looked a certain penalty, the referee played advantage and Oly Stevens fired home the opening goal from close range.

With Busby then having to leave the field injured, Athletic were suddenly down to ten players and Mansfield levelled minutes before half-time.

Then with the referee about to blow tfor the end of the half, Athletic regained the initiative with Caz Toone reacting fastest to put them back in front.

The second half was more comfortable for the Athletic side and with two further goals from Oly Stevens and Neely Stevens, they progressed to the next round where they will play Radcliffe Olympic away in early December.

Athletic men’s first team travelled to Radcliffe Olympic with a depleted side but won through to the next round of the league cup with first half goals from Jake Pantony, Danny Laywood and Mark English. Radcliffe pulled one back after 50 minutes but Athletic never really looked threatened.

Athletic’s development side maintained their 100 per cent record after their tenth league win against Ashby Ivanhoe. Goals from George Lee, Harry Shervington and Nathan Bedford were enough to see them through.
