Triathlons trigger new venture

FLECKNEY and Kibworth Athletics Club broke new ground by organising their first ever bike/run event using a four mile circuit around one of the villages.

The idea for the new venture was borne through the number of club members who are now getting involved in triathlon events, although sadly half a dozen of the club’s chief exponents of this were, for one reason or another, unable to commit to turning out.

Nevertheless eight hardy contestants turned out at Fleckney’s Golden Shield pub on Thursday evening to take up the challenge.

The first two laps were on the bike, followed by one further lap on foot, giving the field a total distance of 12 miles to cover.

Despite the small select turnout, there were some interesting entrants including a newcomer in Kerry Hawkins and a happy return for the club’s original chairman Andrew Wetherby, who made a switch to cycling four years ago following some running-related injuries.

With a handicap in place to attempt to give everyone a fair chance, the first contestant on his marks was Roy Myring, who completed a competitive 34mins 02secs for the eight-mile section.

Next off, two minutes later, were Kerry Hawkins and current chairman Linda Moss, and they recorded 39:58 and 37:56 respectively.

Luke Sinclair was the next starter, a further three minutes later, and he posted 33:41 and was followed out of the blocks after another two minutes by the experienced Andrew Weatherby, who showed everyone how to ride the course competitively with an evening’s best time of 25:19.

Claire Beach and Dave Wheeler, both specialist league runners, were a minute later on their starts, with Beach recording a steady 33:39, while Wheeler, showing off his new racing bike, lacked expereince but nevertheless attacked the course and was satisfied with his time of 27:51.

Closing out the starters was former captain and club stalwart Stacey Voss, who rode a similarly aggressive section to come home in 27:18.

On the running section the times were as follows (based on starting order): Roy Myring 38:33, Kerry Hawkins 36:24, Linda Moss 40:29, Luke Sinclair 36:36, Andrew Weatherby 38:46, Claire Beach 30:26, Dave Wheeler 28:43, Stacey Voss 25:03.

The club then retired to the conveniently located bar of the Golden Shield for the calculation of the combined results and these were in order of the lowest elapsed time less handicap: Stacey Voss 52:21, Dave Wheeler 56:34, Claire Beach 01:04:05, Andrew Weatherby 01:04:07, Luke Sinclair 01:10:17, Roy Myring 01:12:35, Kerry Hawkins 01:16:22 Linda Moss 01:18:25.
