Clubmates Jamie and Duncan match stride for stride in battle of Bosworth

A COUNTRY park at Market Bosworth was the new venue for the second leg of the 2012 Leicestershire Road Running League contested by Fleckney and Kibworth Athletics Club.

Host club Desford Striders had been obliged to move their traditional 10km race from its usual base at the Caterpillar Tractor plant at Peckleton.

The men’s honours for the village club came down to a marvellous contest between Jamie Strange and triathlon specialist Duncan Campbell. Matching strides throughout, they were virtually inseparable at the line with Strange getting the verdict for 30th place in 36mins 34secs. Campbell’s time was given as 36:35, placing him 31st.

Stacey Voss, racing for the first time in 2012, was third counter, taking 58th spot in 37:55, and he was followed by another debutant in the new road season in the form of Josh Smalley, 103rd in 40:27. The remaining places were filled by a pack of hardworking runners led by Mike Turner, 138th, 42:19, Luke St Clair, 254th, 48:02, Willem Veldhuizen, 277th, 49:48, Jon Stone, 297th, 52:29, and Andy Bailey, 328th in 63:15.

In the parallel women’s race there was a second consecutive ‘no result’ for the Fleckney and Kibworth club as the disappointing turnout started at the Barrow 6 race in January continued with only three runners compared to the regulation four finishers. This is a worrying trend for a club who have previously had two top four finishes in league seasons. They hope more women will rally to the call for the three remaining winter league fixtures.

Top finisher was Lorna Muskett, who took 18th place in 44:19, and she was supported by Claire Beach, 30th in 46:25, and Bernadette Owen, 46th in 47:54.

The Derby Runner cross country league fixture saw a local race at Ullesthorpe’s Manor Farm. Sole Fleckney and Kibworth representative was Dave Wheeler who, despite a suspect ankle and blistered feet, plugged away to record his best finish of the season in 121st place in 43:47.

The club have also made a couple of key purchases with the acquisition of a cross country changing tent and a ‘teardrop’ promotional flag for events as the Fleckney Sports Relief Mile on Sunday, March 25, which will be a busy day for the club as in the morning they will compete in this year’s Kibworth 6 league race, with the charity event following in the afternoon.
