A THRILLING opening game in the Harborough Netball League saw leaders Rockingham Construction Ladies pipped by third-placed Langton Arms.
Rockingham took a narrow 13-11 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to the shooting of young Francesca Wilkinson, who is holding her own against more experienced players.
Langton battled hard to block their opponents' attempts to build on their lead and in the second quarter played some superb netball. Colleen Jaffray was again on form at goal defence and Langton led 22-21 going into half-time.
Gill Stokes shone at goal defence for Rockingham but in the final quarter Langton pulled away thanks to the sharp shooting of Kelly Litchfield, which saw them edge home by 47-44.
Division one strugglers Farndon Foods played University of Leicester, who were sitting at the bottom of the league.
The uni team took control of this game with the help of centre Amy Lumb, who had a superb game, dictating the play from the outset.
Farndon seemed to get their heads right for the second quarter as they came out the stronger side. Goalkeeper Vicky Brown made things hard for the uni attack, while at the other end of the court vice-captain Zoe Heads, at goal attack, was on form as she brought the score up to 12-9 to Farndon.
But fortunes changed again for the division one side as University got the better of them after half-time. Wing defence Carolyn Thomas worked tirelessly to cut off their options and they struggled to get the ball into the attacking circle.
University continued to pull away and deservedly took the game 30-24, which lifts them off the bottom spot in division two.
High-flying Royalist played division two side Northants JMs and regained top spot with a 41-28 victory.
JMs are proving difficult opponents across but Royalist got their tactics right from the off as wing attack Rosie Steed fed a series of telling balls into the attacking circle for the shooters to take advantage.
The Harborough team led 21-12 going into half-time, and although JMs drove forward through captain Stacey Poole but goalkeeper Abigail Deacon proved a difficult final hurdle.
Royalist became complacent in the final quarter, enabling JMs to counter throughTania Baker, but they were still able to emerge comfortable winners.
Joules took on The Angel and came out stronger as centre Rachel Bohannon drove the ball forward superbly in a 54-30 win.
Angel, two players down, struggled to get a look in and soon looked tired, although centre Yasmin Inglis made some impressive moves to get the ball to her team's shooters.
Joules continued their cracking game and new addition Clare Bolton proved her worth at wing defence in the easy victory.
