Work is now under way to spruce up the much-loved tribute to Sir Frank Whittle on the southern approach to Lutterworth.

Its location on the busy A4303/A426 roundabout had taken its toll and in recent times the gleaming jet had looked in need of some tender loving care.

The Whittle Trust was awarded £12,000 for essential maintenance by Harborough District Council earlier this year.

The council’s grants panel said the money was a one-off grant to help preserve an iconic landmark.

It was the largest of 26 grants totalling £100,000 which will be handed out by the council this year.
