Used drug debris litters car park

The potentially dangerous problem is happening in a private car park off Coventry Road, Market Harborough.

The car park is shared by town centre businesses including Bensons for Beds and Mountain Warehouse on the High Street and the Cancer Research UK charity shop and Enigma night club on Coventry Road.

“I’ve got sympathy for people sleeping rough” said Jill Foxon, manager of the Cancer Research shop.

“If that was the only problem, and things were cleared up during the day, I’d be OK with that.

“But I can’t have needles left outside our back door. There could be an accident.”

“We wouldn’t have a problem if they were just sleeping there” agreed Kimberley Sawford of Bensons for Beds. “It’s well sheltered and if they have nowhere else to go.

“It’s the drugs and needles we have a problem with.”

“To find that sort of litter on your doorstep, it’s not good” said Kirsty Laird, assistant manager at Mountain Warehouse.

One drug user recently left a trail of blood from the car park along Coventry Road and up the High Street.

The local Moins Chemists has stepped in to help organise a clearance of the drugs debris, because they have special protective equipment.

Abdul Rahim of Moins said: “If we see danger like this we will take responsibility and help out.”

Sgt Kev Manship of Market Harborough police said the local police were looking at the whole problem of a spate of rough sleepers and beggars in the town.

He said Market Harborough police would also be looking into the specific problem of the car park off Coventry Road.
