PEOPLE packed out St Mary’s Church in Lutterworth as the Rev Mervyn Coussens held his last service there.

Mr Coussens has been rector of St Mary’s with Bitteswell and Cotesbach for 21 years.

Just under 300 people came to the service. Among them were members of Mr Coussen’s family, his wife Hilary, children Sarah and David and also friends travelled from across the country to be with him.

There were also fellow clergymen there as well as representatives of other Lutterworth churches.

After the service more than 100 people stayed to be part of a bring and share lunch.

Mr Coussens was presented with a cheque from a collection by the congregation as well as a gift of a Kindle Touch electronic book after expressing his intent to read more widely in his retirement.

He is retiring after reaching the age of 65, the retirement age for the clergy.

Tony Hirons, church warden, said: “I think he was very moved but he also enjoyed it.”
