Mail memories: The pitch that Jack built

Sprightly 70-year-old Jack York said a fond farewell to the Fairfield Road cricket square he tended for 28 years, reported the Mail from 36 years ago this week.

Mr York, pictured with Market Harborough Cricket Club’s then chairman Malcolm Coles, retired as groundsman on April 23, 1978.

The Welland Park Road resident joined the town’s cricket club after the war.

He spent two to three hours every day maintaining the cricket square.
