Was this rare stained glass window in the Harborough district stolen to order?

The irreplaceable window, measuring 37cm by 20cm, was taken from the Grade I listed Withcote Chapel, not far from Tilton on the Hill, between July 24 and July 30.

It depicts the prophet Ezekiel with flowing ginger locks, a blue halo and wearing white, black and red robes.

The panel dates from the 1530s and is believed to be the work of Galeon Hone, glass designer to King Henry VIII.

Dawn Lancaster, of The Churches Conservation Trust said: “We’re shocked by this theft. The window is so unusual, the thieves may have had someone in mind to sell it to. We just don’t know.”

Peter Aiers, Regional Director at The Trust, said: “The Trust is devastated by the theft of a stunning and irreplaceable panel of Tudor stained glass.

“The chapel is an important public building ... this is essentially a theft of public property.”
