Tributes have been paid to the former director of a Kettering firm who died earlier this month at the age of 84.

Graham Butlin spent 32 years at the Shoe and Allied Trade Research Association – better known as SATRA – including 14 years as director.

He spent almost all his working life at the firm, after moving to Barton Seagrave from his native Derbyshire. He also lived in Desborough before moving to Market Harborough 22 years ago.

Mr Butlin died on January 16 and his funeral was held at Market Harborough Methodist Church on January 22.

His achievement in transforming SATRA into an internationally recognised organisation was recognised when he was awarded the OBE in the early 1980s for services to the footwear industry.

In a statement, SATRA said: “Graham played a major role in SATRA’s growth and was a tireless traveller, superb lecturer and skilled negotiator.”

After his retirement, Mr Butlin became a Methodist Church lay preacher and was a volunteer prayer counsellor. He also enjoyed painting and was a member of Market Harborough Art Club.

Mr Butlin is survived by his wife Joyce, 83, and four daughters Pam, Jill, Karen and Helen. He also had 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
