A petition to protect and preserve the war memorial portico at Harborough’s Cottage Hospital has now reached the 2,000-name mark.
Campaigners took to the town’s streets on Saturday morning gathering signatures.
In little more than an hour, 400 names were added to the paper version of the petition, bringing the total to more than 2,000.
Liberal Democrat district councillors Cllr Barbara Johnson, Cllr Roger Dunton and Cllr Phil Knowles were in the town along with campaigner David Johnson, who is chairman of Market Harborough Historical Society.
Cllr Knowles said today (Monday): “The is a real strength of feeling amongst the community.
“Residents who had heard we were scheduled to be in the town actually came along specifically to add their name to the petition.
“The message is clear to the NHS - Harborough expects you to deliver.”
