District school scores top marks in SATs exams

A HARBOROUGH district primary school is celebrating after achieving one of the highest average scores in the country in SATs.

Pupils taking the Key Stage 2 tests at St Andrew’s Church of England School in North Kilworth scored an average of 33 points - the best performance in Leicestershire and joint seventh highest in England.

The tests were sat in the summer by pupils who have since left the school to start secondary education.

Senior teacher at the school, Sarah Holmes, said: “We were delighted but not totally surpised as we had an exceptional bunch of children who had been with us throughout their primary school years.

“They worked really hard and made consistently good progress. So as I say it wasn’t a total surprise but it is nice to see it confirmed.”

Mrs Holmes said the results capped off a good year for the school, which was rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted following an inspection in February.

League tables showing results for 11-year-olds at nearly 16,000 primary schools around England were published last week by the Department for Education.

The tests check pupils’ spelling, grammar and handwriting as well as maths skills such as multiplication, division, fractions and percentages.

The average points score is calculated by assigning each level attained by an individual pupil in English and maths a certain number of points.

Totals are then divided by the number of pupils sitting the tests to provide an average. The top scoring school in the country was in Harrow, north west London, which achieved an average points score of 34.1.
