Brotherly rivalry has turned a 14-mile charity run from Market Harborough to Northampton into a hotly-contested race.
Oliver Jelley (32), from Scotland Road, Little Bowden, and Ben Jelley (26), from Rushton Road, Desborough, will be taking part in the fundraiser on Saturday, June 7, to raise money for the InDependent Diabetes Trust (IDDT).
The Northampton-based charity has recently launched its £20 Challenge in a bid to generate much-needed funds by calling on every supporter to raise an attainable amount.
The pair will be running along the disused railway line between the two towns, now the Brampton Valley Way.
Olly, who runs Husbands Bosworth-based PR agency Orange Juice Communications and works with the charity, said: “It started out with just me but my little brother was keen to get involved – so, as we’re quite competitive, it has inevitably turned into a hotly-contested race.
“Since he decided to join me, my training has increased, but it’s not just about who reaches the finishing line first, it’s also now turning into who raises the most money as well.
“The IDDT works tirelessly in the name of people with diabetes, helping to make their lives easier. I am a dedicated supporter and am proud to be taking on this challenge.”
Ben, a creative designer for East Langton firm The Attic Room, said: “Olly thinks he’s the sporty one, but I’m better at long-distance running so this challenge is my opportunity to get one over on him.”
The IDDT charity has launched its £20 Challenge campaign to help guarantee the continuation of its work providing vital independent support for people with diabetes, their parents and carers.
It provides a free, confidential helpline, has published dozens of helpful publications, stages events and lobbies the Government on behalf of members.
Martin Hirst, the acting IDDT chief executive, said: “Diabetes is quickly becoming the health epidemic of the 21st century. We need to take diabetes seriously before it causes more problems to more people.
“We, like every charity, are reliant on donations but whereas other fundraising drives can be quite demanding, our £20 Challenge is attainable for both our challengers and sponsors.”
