Artisan bakery on its way to town

An award-winning artisan bakery is set to open a new branch in Harborough.

Hambleton Bakery, based at Exton in Rutland, is nearing the end of an expansion project aimed at doubling its production capacity. It is opening a new shop at the former Jacks for Men site in Church Street in Harborough next month.

Jacks closed its menswear shop on February 1 but the women’s shop next door is still going strong.

The new Hambleton outlet will add to its existing shops in Stamford, Oakham and Oundle. The Harborough shop will stock its full range of artisan breads, cakes and savouries.

The firm was named Britain’s Best Bakery in an ITV1 contest aired in 2012. Its team of bakers makes traditional artisan bread and pastries.

The business was set up by Hambleton Hall owner Tim Hart in 2008 as an antidote to fast-baked supermarket bread.

It bakes about 500 loaves a day in its huge wood-fired oven in Exton, but this is set to increase.
