Young farmers sweep the board

DOZENS of members of Lutterworth Young Farmers' Club swept the board at a huge competition for groups across the county.

The Lutterworth group, which has more than 70 members, won the Leicestershire and Rutland Annual County Rally at New Buildings Farm near Willoughby Waterleys.

The Lutterworth group, which was defending the trophy it won last year, scooped the overall top prize as well as another six trophies in various sections.

Tracey Webb, chairman of Lutterworth Young Farmers’ Club, said she was delighted at winning the top prize.

She added: “We have lots of members ranging in age between ten and 26 and they all did really well.

“There were 75 different categories, some of them were serious like the tug-of-war, but others were more organised for novelty value.

“Some of them are also based on farming skills, like sawing and changing tyres on farm machinery, but we also had craft categories like flower arranging and a charity shop-fashion show.”

The tug-of-war team from the Lutterworth group is now planning to go to a competition in Lincolnshire later in the year where they will represent the county.

The Lutterworth group hosted this year’s event and all of the county’s 11 clubs sent groups to take part in the competition.

Overall, more than 600 people took part.

Miss Webb said: “It takes quite a lot of organising but everyone helped and it was a great success.

“Beforehand we all sit around and decide what competitions and categories we would like to host.”

Lutterworth Young Farmers Club meets every Monday at Peatling Parva Village Hall. For information, phone Tracey Webb on 07815 006498 or Emily Marshall on 07999 422365.
