Woodland group is putting down new roots

MEMBERSHIP of a new group set up to create new woodland in Harborough doubled after its first meeting.

Project manager Michael Hitchcox told the Mail the newly-formed Welland Woodlands group is looking forward to National Tree Week from November 24 to December 2.

The group was formed in a bid to plant trees to create new woodland areas in Harborough.

It now has about 18 members following its first meeting at the Angel Hotel last Thursday.

Mr Hitchcox said the group will hope to work closely with environmental group Transition Town Harborough, as well as the Welland Rivers Trust, which is working on a £500,000 conservation project in Harborough.

He said they also hope to work with Harborough District Council.

Mr Hitchcox added: “We’re hoping to hold a stall on The Square during National Tree Week to tell people more about the group.

“It’s an exciting time.”
