Windy Ridge homes one of four development proposals set for approval

Busy...the agenda for Tuesday's meeting

CONTROVERSIAL plans to build 141 homes at the so-called Windy Ridge site off Glebe Road in Harborough look set to be approved.

Planning officers at Harborough District Council have recommended the application by Redrow Homes be given the go-ahead when it comes before the authority’s planning committee on Tuesday (September 18).

It is one of four big planning applications set to be decided on the night, with expansion plans for Magna Park, retirement flats proposals for the former Ritz cinema, and a bid to turn the Copperfield Hotel in to student accommodation all on the agenda.

The committee deferred making a decision on Windy Ridge when the application was last put before them on August 21.

Members requested more information about drainage and revisions to layout and levels along the site’s northern boundary.

The plans have attracted opposition from nearby residents, who have raised fears over toxic contamination at an old clay pit on the site and concerns over road access and development on open fields.

More recently a residents’ group - the Windy Ridge Action Group - have raised objections to an agreement made between the council and Red Row Homes for the developer to pay cash to the authority instead of building affordable homes on the site.

The Magna Park plans, which would see parking for 140 HGVs and 170 cars built on the south of the site, are also set for approval, as are plans by Churchill Retirement Living for the former cinema building in Northampton Road, Harborough, and by Brooke House College for the Copperfield Hotel.
