Waitrose considering move to Harborough

SUPERMARKET giant Waitrose are considering a move to Harborough.

One of the sites they are looking at is the home of Sandicliffe in Harborough, the Ford dealership which operates in Springfield Street.

Last week, speaking to The Mail, Barry Parker, the managing director of Forest Gate which lies on the outskirts of the town, confirmed that he had applied for planning permission to relocate the site at Sandicliffe beside his business in Leicester Road.

Staff at Sandicliffe have been told that whatever the changes happening at the site their jobs were safe.

If the site is vacated and moved to the Forest Gate site the prime location could become available to developers.

Waitrose, which opened a store in Lutterworth several months ago, said it has been keen to move to the town for some time now.

James Armstrong, property and development communications manager for Waitrose, said: "We remain keen to come to Market Harborough and while Springfield Road is one of a number of ideas that have been put forward by developers, we are not in a position to take any of these proposals forward at this time.

Sandicliffe did not confirm whether they have been approached by Waitrose.

If the store opens in Springfield Street there would be four competing supermarkets operating within a few hundred yards of one another.
