Villagers’ 60k solar panel bid

GREEN-minded villagers are bidding for a £60,000 cash grant to help them install solar panels on their community buildings.

The volunteers from North Kilworth want to install the panels on the village primary school, sports club and village hall to save on energy costs and do their bit for the environment.

They have made it to the final six in a competition to receive the funding from the National Lottery Jubilee People’s Millions Fund.

Now they need votes to help them secure the cash.

The group, who have called themselves Village Power CIC (Community Interest Company) say they also plan to plant trees as part of the project, to further help the environment.

Group chairman Stuart Dainton said: “For us the project is a fantastic opportunity to promote renewable energy, bring communities together, and to provide funding to inspire others to think and take action to benefit communities and the environment in which we live.”

A TV crew visited the village yesterday (Wednesday, June 8) to produce a short film which will be shown on ITV Central News between 6.30pm and 7pm on Monday, June 27.

A phone number on which people can vote for their favourite project will also be released that day.

Mr Dainton said: “We really need everyone’s support on the day if we are to get this crucial funding.

“Our project shows that even small villages can have ambition and find new ways to ensure the survival of vital facilities in the face of climate change.”
