Video: Crowds queueing up for Waitrose opening

Waiting for Video...

PEOPLE have been waiting a long time for Waitrose to come to Harborough and today (Thursday) they queued and waited an extra 15 minutes on a bright autumn day to take the last few steps through the door.

There was a buzz of excitement in the air as the Waitrose ‘partners’ [staff at Waitrose are called partners] gathered on the other side of the ribbon ready to welcome their first customers.

More than 50 people queued at the door to take their first glimpse of the well stocked shelves, take tea or a breakfast roll in the cafe and even just to do their weekly shop.

As the hour of opening approached people were called inside the store to watch the cutting of the ribbon by Fiona Cairns and Zoe Morgan-Williams.

Zoe is a pupil of Meadowdale Primary School. She designed the bag for life that will be handed out at the store over the weekend. Fiona Cairns Ltd made the Royal Wedding cake last year.

They cut the ribbon together and the crowds flooded on through.

Cakes were given out by the team from Fiona Cairns Ltd that had pretty designs of the Leicestershire Fox and the Old Grammar School on the icing.

Fiona said she has been waiting for the branch to open for a long time and that the cakes they were giving out that day were made specifically for Waitrose.

She said: “On a personal note I’m very excited. We have a special relationship for 20 years and its grown over those years quite dramatically.”

The new cafe was filled with people sampling all it has to offer and taking a break from their shopping to have tea and coffee and one of their many breakfast options - which included warm rolls and muesli.
