A PROJECT to restore a village’s 19th century windmill could be at risk unless volunteers come forward to help out.

Ullesthorpe Windmill was taken over by a group from the community in 2005, who wanted to restore the run-down building to use it as an educational centre.

However, a subsequent Lottery funding bid fell down a few years ago, meaning the project has been in limbo ever since.

Dr Susan Tebby, one of the trustees, said that unless more volunteers come forward to fill key posts in the group, the project may come to a complete standstill.

She added: “We are looking forward to filling a lot of positions, but we advertised them 18 months ago and have not had any interest so far.

“The Heritage Lottery Fund backed our bid initially, but they will only give money to a cause which has backing from the community, not just a few people.”

Dr Tebby said an open weekend held over Saturday and Sunday proved a success, with almost 130 people visiting the windmill over the two days.

She added: “We also took £320 for our funds, which is handy.”

Among the attractions over the course of the two days were a number of model windmills, created by molinologist David Goldsmith, and a Morris dancing display by all-female group Bare Bones.
