UPDATED: Harborough MP Edward Garnier issues statement over his cabinet exit
Sacked...Edward Garnier has lost his job as Solicitor General.
HARBOROUGH MP Edward Garnier says he is “disappointed” after being sacked as Solicitor General in Prime Minster David Cameron’s cabinet reshuffle.
The 59-year-old was appointed Solicitor General - the Government’s second highest legal post - when the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition took power in May 2010 after two spells as Shadow Attorney General and as Shadow Home Affairs Minister while in opposition.
In a press release sent to the Mail at 6.15pm today (Tuesday), the long-standing Tory MP for Harborough said he was disappointed but appeared to phlegmatic about the news.
He said: “Of course it is disappointing to lose one’s job in Government but losing out in politics is not unheard of and often has nothing to do with merit or messing things up.
“The Prime Minister told me that I had done an excellent job as Solicitor General but he needed to change the faces round the table. My replacement, [North East Hertfordshire MP] Oliver Heald, will enjoy the work as I have – it is a huge honour to work in Government and even more as a senior barrister in the Commons to be a law officer.
“I will miss it but have plenty to be getting on with out of Government.”
Speaking to the BBC earlier today Mr Garnier said the PM was “refreshing” his administration. He said he believed Conservative MPs “are up for these changes” and support the reshuffle.
