A CHRISTMAS tree growing couple from Dunton Bassett will be delivering a tree to take up residence in 10 Downing Street this December after winning a prize in a national competition.

Richard and Gail Underwood of Oakberry Trees won the runner-up prize in the Champion Christmas Tree Grower award at the 14th Annual British Christmas Tree Growers Association (BCTGA) competition at the Berkshire College of Agriculture in Maidenhead on October 30.

They now have the honour of presenting a Christmas tree to stand in 10 Downing Street’s Pillared Room, which is used when international agreements are being signed, and as the main staging area for receptions.

Richard said: “We’re delighted to know that one of our own trees will have pride of place inside such a beautiful room at one of the country’s most famous residences.”

BCTGA secretary Harry Brightwell added: “Our tree competition is always popular with our members and this year was no different.

“The standard of the entries this year was extremely high but Richard’s tree particularly impressed the judges.

“We’re looking forward to seeing him deliver a tree to Downing Street to bring some festive spirit to all those who visit the Pillared Room.”

The Underwoods also won the Best Spruce category.

The winner of the competition was a Scottish Christmas tree grower whose tree will stand outside 10 Downing Street during the festive period.

The trees will be unveiled on November 30.

The judges scored the trees on their foliage, colour, shape and marketability to determine the overall winner.
