Town to bid for share of Big Lottery eco-fund

AN ECO-CONSCIOUS group is holding a public meeting to discuss plans to bid for a slice of a £10m community fund.

The Big Lottery’s Communities Living Sustainable fund is looking to invest in up to ten communities across the country to help them make improvements so they can live more sustainably.

The Transition Harborough group is holding a public meeting at the Angel Hotel in High Street, Harborough on Monday at 7.30pm to discuss ideas which the town could put forward in its bid for a share of the cash.

Darren Woodiwiss, of the group, said: “Do you have an idea that will help Harborough become more self reliant, more resilient or just create sustainable jobs? Then let us know as we would like to include your ideas into our bid.

“We are seeking partners from all aspects of society - the more the better, to collectively input ideas into this bid.”

Mr Woodiwiss said other similar funds have been set up before but were only available for smaller communities.

This new fund is open to communities of 10,000 people or more.

The programme will invest in communities by providing access to expert support and advice as well as up to £10,000 to develop a project plan that details environmental, economic and social challenges and how they can be addressed.

Grants of between £500,000 and £1 million for up to five years for a range of activities and initiatives are also available.

Mr Woodiwiss added: “We need to harvest the collective genius of the folk and businesses of Harborough.

“We hope to see a good number of people at the meeting, bring your ideas and enthusiasm.”
