Toilet trouble sparks appeal by Carnival

AN APPEAL for help has gone out by Harborough Carnival organisers after metal thieves stole pipework from toilets at the park where the big summer event is held.

The break-in at the bowls pavilion at Symington’s Rec – home to the showground activities on the big day – has left the organising committee facing the prospect of having to bring in portable toilets

And they fear the extra expense will hit the charitable organisations which benefit from profits made at the carnival, which this year will be held on Saturday, June 9.

The proceeds from last year’s event saw almost £5,000 shared out among dozens of local organisations and deserving causes.

Carnival Committee chairman John Bush said every extra penny which must be spent on organising and providing facilities for the day will inevitably impact on the amount of money dished out.

The committee has appealed for help from anyone who can offer portable toilets for use on the day.

Mr Bush told the Mail: “It is bad news. These are the toilets that the carnival uses for the showground.

“If they are not repaired by carnival day we will be obliged to rent toilets for the day.

“This is not only very expensive but have to be paid whether the weather is good or bad.

“The carnival already has significant cost in advance of the day but this decreases the amount available for local charities.

“If nothing can be done in advance of the carnival it will be a real problem.”

The break-in happened over the Easter weekend when copper piping was stolen and items belonging to Harborough Youth and Community Trust damaged.

The Carnival Committee was informed of the damage this week by trustees of the Cube youth group, which is working on a project to turn the pavilion into a youth cafe as part of a scheme by HYACT.

However the work will not be completed in time for the carnival.

The pavilion is owned by Harborough District Council, but HYACT is planning to lease it from the authority.
