TREASURE your sight by getting your eyes checked regularly, says Harborough MP Edward Garnier after visiting a branch of optometrists in Harborough.

Mr Garnier had his eyes checked by optometrist Dan Callaghan at Clinton-Smith Warren and Davis Optometrists in St Mary’s Road.

Mr Garnier said: “I learnt a great deal about the importance of eye health during my visit.

“Not only is a regular sight test vitally important for those who wear glasses, but having your eyes checked can also detect early signs of eye conditions like glaucoma and cataracts, or other health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes or even brain tumours.”

He added: “The message is clear and simple: treasure your sight by getting your eyes tested regularly to help ensure you have healthy eyes and avoid illnesses.

“I get my eyes checked every year.”

Optometrist Mr Callaghan, who qualified from Manchester University before spending a year doing professional training, joined the firm in the autumn.

He said: “We strongly advise that everyone have their eyes tested regardless of whether you need prescriptions for glasses or lenses.

“For healthy eyes we also advise that you eat well, don’t smoke and wear eye protection in bright sunlight.”

Most people should have their eyes tested every two years.

But certain groups of people might be more susceptible to eye damage, and so need a check-up more often. These include people with a history of eye conditions in the family, and those aged over 40 of an Afro-Carribean or Asian background.

A total of 1.8 million people in the UK live with sight loss, but for 53 per cent, a simple test and new spectacles could help.
