Teachers learn the skills behind caring

SIX student teachers recently visited a care home in Harborough to gain an insight into how it is managed.

Lenthall House, in Lenthall Square, hosted the University of Leicester PGCE students, who learned about staff roles and the skills and qualities key to those roles, ongoing training, policies and procedures.

The visit was organised by the Leicestershire Education Business Company with the aim of arming the students with a better understanding of the care sector.

Karen Winder, officer in charge at the home and a care ambassador, gave the visitors a guided tour of the specialist respite unit, for people with dementia, and a demonstration on how to use the equipment.

James Beadsworth, one of the students on the visit, said: “It was a very interesting and insightful visit. This placement will help us as student teachers to develop links with caring organisations, a process that will be vital to the pupils we will be teaching in the future.”

More companies are needed to host a visit from teachers to give them a real experience of the workplace.
