A TEACHER from Lutterworth is preparing to tackle the Great North Run in two weeks’ time to raise money for a cancer charity in memory of her mum.

Jennie Green (30), will be raising money for Cancer Research UK at the Newcastle event, which is the biggest half-marathon in the world.

Jennie, who works as an assistant head at a school in Loughborough, says she is determined to conquer the famous 13.1-mile race for very personal reasons.

In January 2007 Jennie’s mum, Susan Green, passed away after a five-year battle with cancer.

Jennie said: “Mum kept smiling right to the end, and though the cancer beat her body it never beat her soul. Her funeral was packed out with friends old and new and was the most uplifting funeral I’ve ever been to – just the way she would have wanted it.”

Since Susan’s death, Jennie has run both 5km and 10km Race for Life events in her memory. She promised her mum that she would do the Great North Run in her honour – a promise she cannot wait to fulfil.

She hopes to finish inside two-and-a-half hours and aims to raise at least £500 for Cancer Research UK.

She said: “I’m proud to be running for Cancer Research UK and raising money to help beat this disease.

“My boyfriend, Russell Edwards, and some friends will be there to cheer me over the finishing line, and I know my Mum will be with me every step of the way, pushing me up that hill at the end.

“This is a real challenge for me and I have found it hard to fit in the training alongside my busy job, but I am doing this in celebration of my beautiful mum and that has spurred me on. I know it is going to be a fantastic day for me because I will be doing her proud.”

Helen Jackson, Cancer Research UK’s senior sports team manager, said: “We’re delighted Jennie is part of our team this year. It’s thanks to support like this that Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists are able to go on making progress in the fight against cancer.

“We are still keen to hear from anyone who has secured their own place in the Bupa Great North Run but hasn’t chosen a charity yet.”
