GRANTS totalling £7,000 were shared out to 28 local charities and worthy causes at a heart-warming presentation evening.

The money was the proceeds of the Rotary Club of Market Harborough’s second annual SwiMarathon, in which teams collected sponsorship to take part.

Each team was challenged to swim in relay for one hour at Harborough Leisure Centre during the two-day event in April this year.

Groups from across the area were then invited to apply through the Harborough Mail for grants from the SwiMarathon fund.

The grants were decided by a panel of five judges and ranged from £50 to £500.

On Monday the cheques were presented to the selected recipients at a presentation buffet meal held at the Robert Smyth Academy.

The SwiMarathon involved 30 swimming teams from local businesses, schools and clubs, plus some Rotarians and their families and friends.

There were also small prizes awarded to swimmers and individuals whose efforts stood out. These were Market Harborough C of E Primary School (most teams entered), Hazel Stephens (best team organiser), 3 Willy (best team name), Harborough Leisure Centre (most lengths), Great Bowden Ladies A team (most sponsorship money), William Lacey, aged 4 (Junior Star Swimmer), and Great Bowden Ladies B team, average age over 70 (Senior Team Swimmers).

Plans are already under way for the 2013 SwiMarathon to be held at Harborough Leisure Centre.

A string of business sponsors and supporters were also thanked. They were:

Andrew Granger Ltd, Brooke House College, Clinton Smith, Warren and Davis Opticians, Emerson and West, e.surv Chartered Surveyors, Gildings Auctioneers, Harborough Rubber, Heffords Solicitors, It’s a Gas (party shop), Jet-Pumps UK, Lewingtons Heating Engineers, Market Harborough Building Society, Mayday Independent Financial Services, Mistrys Pharmacy, Nevill Arms Medbourne, NFU Mutual, ET Pierson and Sons accountants, Quinns Bookshop and Gallery, J Stamp and Sons Funeral Directors, Stephen Sanderson Transport Ltd, Veneto Restaurant, Wartnabys Solicitors and Wesses Craft Bakery, the Harborough Mail and Harborough FM.
