A firefighter from Harborough is taking to the historic British Grand Prix motor racing circuit on Sunday to take part in the annual Silverstone half-marathon.

Stuart Cooke, who is a retained firefighter in town, is running the event to raise funds for the county air ambulance charity.

Mr Cooke (pictured, inset) said: “I wanted to highlight it much as possible to raise as much as I can.”

Thousands take part in the run each year with many using it as a warm-up for the London Marathon in April.

On his fundraising page, Stuart explains: “Within my work in the fire service, I attend many car accidents some of which the air ambulance is called upon.

“They attend within minutes of being requested, showing the utmost professionalism and great ability to work with other agencies. I have seen first-hand how this service can save lives.

“I think they do a superb job and also as an organisation have to work hard on fundraising activities to keep this big yellow bird in the skies due to the fact they receive no Government or Lottery funding.

“I am aware times are hard for us all but if you able to give anything for this invaluable service please do, therefore the days of pain I’ll have after running 13.2 miles around Silverstone race track are not in vain!”
