AN ENTHUSIASM for his sport that makes him and those around him shine bright saw Dean Barnett take the award for Sports Personality of the Year.

The local cycling stalwart, who earlier in the evening won the Sports Alliance Special Award, won the top prize of the night on the strength of votes cast plus the judges’ opinions.

Described as being integral to the Welland Valley Cycling Club, Mr Barnett organises a whole weekend of cyclo-cross riding for people of all ages every year.

David Wilson, who nominated him for the Sports Alliance award said: “His enthusiasm shines bright and the children always react to this.

“I’ve never seen such a group of kids with such a level of absolute respect that they show Dean, inspired by his approach.”

Mr Barnett is also involved in football teams and finds time somehow to train and race bikes himself.

”He quite simply is gold dust and thoroughly deserves recognition for being that,” Mr Wilson added.

From the reaction of the audience and despite his modesty in winning the main gong of the night, it was clear the recognition given to him was thoroughly deserved.

Runners up were Tracey Gardner and Danny Laywood.
