Spectators injured in crash at race meet released from hospital
SPECTATORS who were injured when a car lost control and crashed during a race meeting at Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground have been released from hospital, race organisers say.
The three people - two men and a woman - were injured when a Seat Ibiza crashed through safety barriers during a sprint race at the GTI International event held at Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground on Sunday.
The Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance (WNAA) was scrambled to help deal with the incident, at about 2.30pm.
It said its onboard paramedics treated two 23-year-old men at the scene, one for brusing to the head and injury to the pelvis, and the second for supected spinal injuries after he was hit side-on by the car,
A female spectator was treated by East Midlands Ambulance Service.
All three were taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary by land ambulance but have since been allowed home, race organisers said this week.
The incident is being investigated by Leicestershire Police.
GTI International describes itself as the UK’s biggest event for high performance Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda and Porsche vehicles.
A statement from the organisers said it was the first time in 25 years of the event taking place that such an incident had happened.
It said: “Sadly, the sprint at the 25th GTI International was marred when one of the cars on the track went out of control, crashing through the collision barriers and the metal fencing, and injuring three visitors to the event.
“At the present time, we cannot comment on the cause of the accident, as it is being investigated by Leicestershire Police.
“Fortunately our officials are prepared to deal with emergencies and, as a result of quick action by the Sprint team, our rescue vehicle, with its trained crew, the St John Ambulance, and our resident paramedic, were all on the scene very quickly indeed.
“Injuries were not as serious as first suspected and all three have now been released from hospital.”
A spokesperson from WNAA said: “Our sister service Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance were out on a separate rescue so we were called to the scene; this is a great example of how Air Ambulances can work together to ensure that everyone who needs it receives high quality pre hospital care.
“All of the emergency services and the on-site medical staff worked well together on the scene to provide the best possible treatment to the multiple casualties.”
