THE SON of a retired Lutterworth Grammar School teacher who died last week has paid tribute to his dad.

Andy Ward, who taught history at the Grammar School, now called Lutterworth College, for more than 30 years between 1974 and 2007, died unexpectedly at the age of 65.

His son Michael said Mr Ward passed away peacefully last Thursday, August 30, surrounded by his family.

Mr Ward was born in Chapeltown, Sheffield, on August 29, 1947, the youngest of three children.

He qualified as a teacher at Durham University in 1972, and moved to Lutterworth two years later to take a post at the grammar school, where he worked until his retirement in 2007.

He married wife Sharon in 1983. They had two children, Michael (27) and Sarah (24). Andy also leaves behind two grandchildren.

Son Michael said: “My dad was a passionate and inspirational teacher. He was fascinated by his subject, and he passed on this passion and interest to his pupils, several of whom he remained in contact with until his passing.

“He was a kind-hearted, generous and modest man who lived to help others. When his mother passed away he took care of his brother Derek, who had Down’s syndrome.”

Mr Ward greatly enjoyed travelling to different European cities with his wife, taking in the culture and perusing the second-hand bookshops.

He also enjoyed taking his dog Penny for long walks around the Lutterworth area.

Michael said: “He was known for his droll and witty sense of humour, and the twinkle in his eye.

“He touched many lives and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.”

A celebration of Andy’s life will be held at Lutterworth Cricket Pavilion this Monday, September 10, at 4pm. Anyone who knew Mr Ward is welcome.
