Should Harborough have a town council?

THE MERITS of Market Harborough having its own town council are set to be looked at.

Members of Harborough District Council are to discuss on Monday proposals to launch a review in to the possibility.

It is part of a Community Governance Review, which could also lead to some ward boundaries in the district changing.

Town councils have only limited powers, but receive a budget with which to manage local amenities.

Lutterworth has one but the town of Market Harborough does not.

The issue has surfaced a number of times over the years.

Lib Dem opposition lead Phil Knowles has called for the decision over whether to set up a town council to be opened up to the public.

“This is not a decision for local politicians, it is for the community to decide,” he said.

“I had briefings on this some weeks ago and made my views clear. The community must be given all the facts the arguments both in favour and those against. They must be given the fullest and maximum detail on all aspects.

“Then they can make their decision stating if they do or do not want a Town Council and we should work with the result.”
