Services back to normal after rail chaos, says operator

Trains on the Harborough to St Pancras line are running normally again after the disruption over the last couple of days, East Midlands Trains has said.

The collapse of lines near Radlett in Hertfordshire brought a St Pancras to Corby train to a halt at about 11.15am on Wednesday.

Passengers had to be escorted off trains trapped as a result of the incident and services were cancelled.

Network Rail engineers worked through the night to fix the 1km section of overhead wires which had been damaged, but services did not return to normal until today.

A spokesperson for East Midlands Trains said: “We would like to apologise to passengers for the severe disruption to our services which was caused by a serious overhead wire problem.

“Network Rail engineers carried out repair work overnight to allow us to restore services.”

A statement on its website today said: “We are pleased to announce that a full normal timetable is now in operation to/from London. This follows the disruption to services due to major overhead line problems near Luton in recent days. We apologise for the inconvenience that this has caused over the past few days.”

Rail users delayed as a result of the problems may be entitled to compensation, said the rail operator.
