A £1 MILLION catering training facility and dining area for Robert Smyth School’s students has been officially opened.

Work began on the purpose-built centre at the Harborough school last April and was finished in December, ready for lessons at the start of the new term.

It was officially opened by Peter Osborne, chairman of Leicestershire County Council, on Tuesday.

The new facility includes dining space for the school’s 1,400 students as well as a teaching area for pupils studying a new hospitality and catering diploma.

Robert Smyth business manager Julie Charter said she was delighted that the work was now complete.

She added: “The feedback from students has been really positive.

“The former building was a Nissen hut-style structure which was quite old – but now we have space for long benches and tables and it has become a social area as well as a place for eating.”

The building, which sits at the southern edge of the school site, will also be available for use by community groups.

It is named ‘sixteen07’, taken from the founding date of Harborough’s Old Grammar School.

Mrs Charter said: “The opening ceremony was nice. We had music played by one of our students and we projected images of the new canteen area and building onto the walls.”

The kitchen has been stocked with pots and pans thanks to the efforts of the Friends of Robert Smyth, which organised fundraising quizzes.
