School facing closure due to falling intake
A VILLAGE school whose intake is predominantly made up from the travellers’ community is facing the axe.
Braybrooke Primary School in Church Close could close because falling pupil numbers mean it might no longer be financially viable.
A meeting of Northamptonshire County Council’s cabinet on Tuesday will consider whether to start the formal school closure process for Braybrooke by issuing statutory notices which would signal the beginning of a six-week period where formal representations can be made to the council. At the end of that period, a final decision will be made on whether to close the school.
The council carried out a public consultation on the proposed closure in September following a request from the governing body
Cllr Andrew Grant, cabinet member for schools, said: “The school governors have looked at the current and anticipated pupil numbers.
“With just over 20 pupils expected to be on the school roll next year, and as a school’s budget is determined by pupil numbers, there are concerns that the school won’t be financially viable.
“The cabinet meeting will give us the opportunity to consider the feedback received during the consultation and the public meeting.”
If a decision is taken to close the school, all the pupils who currently attend will be allocated places in schools near their home address.
The cabinet meeting takes place on Tuesday at County Hall in Northampton.
