A Lutterworth man is preparing for a gruelling challenge which will see him run 630 miles to raise money for two of Leicestershire’s special schools.

Retired teacher Neil Foster (59) will be raising money for Ellesmere College in Leicester where he taught for 16 years, and Ashmount School in Loughborough, where his former colleague Dave Thomas is head teacher.

Both schools are due to move to new locations in the near future and need extra money to be able to afford provision to cater for the children, including sporting equipment to train in Paralympic sports.

Ashmount and Ellesmere are both members of the Leicestershire and Rutland Inclusive Sports Association (LARISA) who focus on developing sport for the disabled, something which Neil is passionate about.

Neil will run the South West Coastal Path in May and June, during which he will rack up 630 miles over a number of days. Along his route he will climb and fall a combined distance of 23000 feet, the equivalent of ascending and descending almost four Mount Everests.

Neil is a former junior champion runner and has defied the onset of old age, keeping fit by frequently running, cycling, swimming and playing sport. He hopes to finish the run just before his 60th birthday.

“If I can help the two schools add to the tremendous sporting awareness following the Olympics and Paralympics that’s something I would be proud to do,” he said.

“Children with special needs don’t always get the recognition they need and I want to do my bit to help LARISA and both of these schools provide the start the students need in life.”
