A GROUP of volunteers who have been bringing Harborough into bloom for years have received The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

Harborough In Bloom has received the award known for being the MBE for volunteer groups.

Volunteers from Harborough In Bloom were invited to the Royal Garden Party last Tuesday where they saw the Queen, Prince Philip, the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Charles.

Chris Etherington, project manager of Harborough In Bloom, said: “It was superb, the weather was just lovely. Kate looked absolutely gorgeous and I was quite excited to be seeing her.

“We were all really excited to see so many members of the Royal family. It made the day very special.

“Added to that, I had also been informed prior to our visit to the Palace that we had officially become a recipient of The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service 2012, but unfortunately I was not allowed to share it with anyone until after June 2nd.”

Mrs Etherington, who has kept the secret under her hat for weeks, was interviewed by the county’s deputy lord lieutenant and the nomination was further assessed by a national committee.

She said: “The volunteers work so hard to make the town beautiful. I am thrilled that they have received this award as they really deserve it.

“We also have fingers crossed that this year we win our category in East Midlands in Bloom.

“We would encourage anyone wanting to be involved in volunteer work to join our team, it’s great fun.”

The citation on the certificate, which will be signed by the Queen and presented to Harborough In Bloom along with a piece of crystal, will read: Market Harborough In Bloom Volunteers – Enhancing the visual impact of the town through floral displays and environmental initiatives.

Anyone wanting to volunteer and help make Harborough bloom should contact Mrs Etherington on 07778 120039.
