Richard III painting to go on auction in Harborough
The oil painting by John Fulleylove of Richard III outside The Blue Boar Inn in Leicester.
An oil painting of Richard III is going on sale by auction in Harborough next Tuesday (February 26).
It will be sold at Gildings Auctioneers at The Mill in Great Bowden Road and is expected to fetch between £2,000 and £3,000.
The timing could not be better in light of the recent confirmation of Richard III’s remains being found in a Leicester car park which has garnered media attention around the globe.
The painting is by John Fulleylove (1845-1908) who is one of Leicester’s most famous artists of that period. It depicts the king outside the Blue Boar Inn in Leicester.
Mark Gilding, from the auction house, said: “This is particularly interesting as Richard III is known to have rested there on the night of August 20, 1485, on his way to [the scene of his death at] Bosworth Field.”
The artist’s other renowned works have been exhibited widely at venues such as The Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Society of British Artists.
The auction starts at 10.30am.
