Review over heart unit after Westminster talks

A DEBATE has been raised in Westminster Hall about the closure of a children’s heart surgery unit, thanks to Harborough MP Edward Garnier.

He raised the issue after more than 100,000 people signed a petition against the axing of the unit at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester.

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt has now ordered a full review after an independent panel told him there were grounds for a rethink.

The decision to close the unit was made after an NHS review earlier this year.

Mr Garnier led Monday’s debate in the House of Commons.

He said the decision to recommend excluding the unit from future cardiac care provision in England must be reconsidered and the future of the adult and children’s Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation service at the hospital should be looked at simultaneously.

Mr Garnier welcomed news of the review but said the Government would not consider the decision to remove ECMO services.

He said the Glenfield ECMO Unit for children and adults and the Glenfield cardiac services unit should remain open.

Responding to health minister Anna Sourby, Mr Garnier, said: “We all know that the current decision is wrong ... the minister will go back to her department and inform the secretary of state that Parliament thinks that decision is wrong ... we will stick to this issue like a barnacle until we are satisfied the matter has been properly resolved.”

Sally Smith, of Munroe Close, Harborough, who has been rallying round for petition signatures, said: “We are so grateful to Edward for securing this debate and to our county MPs who eloquently expressed our views.

“It was always a cross-party issue and it is refreshing to see such support and co-operation.”
