A trip down memory lane was enjoyed by alumni of the old Market Harborough Grammar School (now Robert Smyth Academy) on Saturday (March 2).

The 50-year reunion was for people who started as first-years at the Burnmill Road school in September, 1962.

Val Swallow (nee West), the event organiser, said: “We had the most amazing reunion on Saturday (March 2) to celebrate 50 years since we joined what used to be the Market Harborough Grammar School.

“After a great deal of detective work, 37 former pupils and their partners came from near and far (Durham, Kent, Surrey, Chester, Hampshire and Lincolnshire) to attend.

“The venue was the magnificent Robert Smyth Hall, formerly the Old Library, which now displays the students’ inspirational art work which was much-admired by all.”

Deputy head teacher Phil Pope gave tours of the school so the attendees could see how much technology now impacts on education.

“There are now lots of computers and no blackboards,” said Mrs Swallow, “extensive building work and modern facilities. The tours triggered fond memories and much conversation ensued. Some people hadn’t met up for 45 years but most were still instantly recognisable.

“It was a fun-filled evening and the years just dropped away. We could have been in our teens laughing at all the past events we recalled.”

There was a delicious buffet supper provided by the catering department and it was “a blast from the past without a doubt!” Mrs Swallow added.

They thanked Sarah Blackler and Mr Pope at Robert Smyth Academy for co-ordinating the wonderful reunion.
