Report into GCSE fiasco is ‘unfair’

THE headteacher at Harborough’s Robert Smyth Academy has dismissed a report by the exam regulator into this summer’s GCSEs fiasco as unfair.

The Ofqual report concluded teachers in some cases were guilty of “significantly” over-marking papers amid pressure to produce good results.

Headteachers have claimed thousands of students received lower than expected English results after grade boundaries were raised.

Robert Smyth head Colin Dean said: “If this only applies in some cases, then why should all students who took that exam be made to suffer?

“This is blatantly unfair. Not only that, but it implies that the systems and measures the exam boards have in place for the moderation of teachers’ marking are inadequate.

“The whole issue continues to be a shambles. What is so upsetting is that the students seem to have become pawns in a political exercise.”
