A VOLLEYBALL referee who has been involved in his sport for almost four decades and who helped at the London Olympics has been applauded for his outstanding sporting achievements.

Ray Capewell (73), from Broughton Astley, has been given an award by Leicestershire and Rutland Sport, sponsored by Imago, to celebrate the achievements of senior sports people, volunteers and physical activity participants from across Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland.

The awards honoured more than 2,400 years of physical activity and sporting participation completed by 33 nominated active older people from across the county and city.

Ray began his path to becoming a volleyball referee 37 years ago playing the national men’s leagues, He then retired from volleyball and took up coaching, working with the Leicester Sound ladies team.

He later became one of the first ever beach volleyball referees in the UK.

At 73, Ray has been working as Beach Volleyball Technical Official Group Leader, training and developing the scorers and lines people for the London 2012 Olympics for the past four years.

In April this year he received a long service award for his services to the development of Beach and Indoor Volleyball, at the end of season Volleyball Conference and Dinner.

Harborough District Councillor Blake Pain said: “It is great to have an individual like Ray living in the district.

“The time, energy and passion Ray has given to his sport is commendable and has been recognised through various awards.

“There are lots of opportunities for anyone to get involved in sports, like Ray, through volunteering or coaching.

“If anyone would like to know more about how they can get involved we would urge them to contact the Leisure team at Harborough District Council.”
