Purple badges will help to stamp out polio

ROTARIANS in Harborough are playing their part in the organisation’s worldwide fundraising effort to eradicate polio.

They will be offering purple crocus lapel badges, for a suggested donation of £1, under the Old Grammar School in town between 9am and 1pm on Saturday.

All donations will go to the Rotary International Polio Plus campaign.

This pays for immunisation against polio in countries where the state does not fund it.

Rotary has been funding this campaign for more than 20 years.

There are now just four countries where new polio cases still being discovered.

The purple crocus is the symbol of this campaign because often when children in third world countries are immunised, their little finger is dipped in purple dye to show they have been immunised.

Rotary World Polio Plus Day is held in February and in the UK this is around the date when crocuses start to appear.
