Posties lose bikes over health and safety concerns
Posties based at the Harborough sorting office will no longer be able to use pedal power to complete their rounds after being told their bikes are being replaced by trollies.
Royal Mail bosses say the traditional bikes are no longer effective as postmen and women are now delivering more parcels, which are heavier and bulkier and not as easy to carry on a bike.
The Harborough sorting office is the latest in Leicestershire to make the switch after similar proposals were announced at the Melton Mowbray office and at two in Leicester.
A spokesman for the Royal Mail said: “As we deliver fewer letters but more parcels than we did in the past, we are removing bicycles from our operations in Harborough.
“They are being replaced with vans and trolleys that enable us to take the weight off the shoulders of our staff and therefore deliver mail more securely and safely.”
