Plans heating up for Olympic torch’s arrival

PREPARATIONS for the arrival of the Olympic Torch to the Harborough district are in full swing.

Official Olympic banners have gone up in Kibworth and Harborough, Arts Fresco acts have been announced and excitement is building in every village and town to which the torch is coming on July 2.

The torch will be passing through Dingley at 3.07pm in Main Road.

Jo Ingham, parish council chairman, said: “Dingley must be one of the smallest communities through which the torch will be travelling and we are honoured to have the Olympic Torch Relay come to us.

“We very much look forward to seeing our neighbours from local villages at the event.”

The village is putting on entertainment from an hour before the torch passing through.

The torch will then travel to Harborough where it will pass through Rockingham Road at 3.19pm, Adam And Eve Street at 3.32pm, Church Square at 3.33pm, Coventry Road at 3.35pm and Lubenham Hill to Top Close at 3.45pm.

Once the torch has passed through Harborough further celebrations will be taking place at Symington’s Rec from 4pm.

Arts Fresco performers will be entertaining people along the route from 2pm. For more information see panel below.

Wendy Savill, of Harborough’s Olympic Torch Committee, said: “I think people should be there, it is a chance of a lifetime.

“It is a great thing to happen in Harborough and there will be all sorts of things going on.

“It will be almost like a party atmosphere. I would encourage everybody to come and see what is going on and what is happening.”

Mrs Savill was putting up the colourful banners in the town on Tuesday night, for which the committee has fundraised and sought grants.

After Harborough the torch will pass through Lubenham. It will go to Main Street from the village sign at 3.49pm, turn to Foxton Road at 3.54 and go from Foxton Road to the national speed sign at 3.55pm.

The torch will then pass through Foxton at 4.51pm from Main Street to the national speed limit sign by 5pm.

Finally the torch will pass through Kibworth Harcourt at 5.05pm in Harborough Road A6 from the 30mph sign before passing through on to Leicester Road A6 at the 40mph sign.

People wishing to be stewards on the route have until tomorrow to volunteer. Anyone interested is asked to phone 01858 828282 for more information.
